We have an exciting opportunity for a superb youth worker to join our dynamic team at Chances. We want energetic and innovative people to join our experienced team, who work collaboratively to ensure that young people are engaged in their education and unlock their potential. We offer academic and pastoral support to young people who have been referred to us as they are close to exclusion from mainstream schools. This includes 1-1 support focusing on the well being of young people and supporting group educational activities inside the classroom. The successful candidate will deliver formal and informal educational support to young people on the fringes of mainstream education.

Employment type: Permanent

Hours of work: 23 per week (split across 3 days, Wed, Thurs, Fri), 40 weeks per year (term-time only)

Salary: JNC unqualified scale pt 9 - 10, qualified scale pt 10 - 13 (Actual salary £13,294 - £15,501)

What is the role

  • To offer young people 1-1 support outside of the classroom and help with a wide range of issues that may be having an impact on their learning

  • To contribute to the design and delivery of personal, social and/or educational programmes and projects that inspire young people, capture their interests and meet their needs through a high quality curriculum

  • To facilitate young people's improved learning skills, self-esteem and confidence, to support the reintegration back to mainstream education

  • To enable vulnerable young people to develop personal resilience as they escalate and de-escalate through different needs and services

  • To support young people during their transition from dependence to independence

  • To design and deliver wellbeing packages to support young people with their emotions

  • To be actively involved in classroom scenarios either supporting (or at times leading) small groups in core curriculum subjects

  • To facilitate young people’s voice and influence

  • To be self motivating and willing to try new things. A collaborative team member who puts forward ideas and values everyone's contribution

  • Work with youth work teams across Space as required

About You:  

  • Commitment to achieving Level 3 qualification in a negotiated time scale - including some voluntary hours to complete or qualified level 3 in Youth Work

  • Successful classroom experience of managing challenging behaviour in the classroom

  • An understanding of the Key Stage 3 / 4 National Curriculum

  • Detailed understanding of the characteristics of effective teaching and learning and of effective assessment practices

  • Effective written and verbal communication

  • ICT literate

  • A strong understanding of intervention strategies

  • An ability to differentiate instructions to accommodate students with diverse learning needs
