Description :

We are looking to recruit a Youth Leader for Bradninch Youth Club.

Our Youth Leader plays a vital role in running Youth Club on a day-to-day basis, ensuring
young people have access to a safe, welcoming and fun environment.

Our mission: Our mission is to support children and young people to improve their life
opportunities by helping them grow as individuals and members of the community. We aim
to engage young people in and around Bradninch in fun and inclusive activities in a safe
space, where they can relax, be creative, make friends, develop their interests and skills,
increase their self-awareness and seek advice and support.

Hours: Currently 2 x 2 hours per week (Tuesday and Wednesday evenings 7.00 – 9.00 pm,
including set-up and close down, plus 2 hours planning time).

Pay: The Youth Leader is currently paid at a rate of £12.50 per hour (this will rise to £13.50
in April). Holiday pay is not payable as holidays are taken during school holidays. You will be
paid via BACS on a monthly basis and will be liable for tax and National Insurance (if due).

Key responsibilities

1. Ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all young people, building and
maintaining positive relationships with young people attending Youth Club.

2. Recruit, training and manage staff and volunteers, acting as the main point of
contact for any HR issues that emerge from the team. Co-ordinate and chair team
meetings once a term.

3. Plan and run regular activities for young people (e.g. cooking, art, crafts, visits from
other agencies, etc), ensuring a programme of interesting activities are available to
suit a range of interests and needs and involving the young people in shaping
activities. Organise occasional bigger trips (e.g. laser tag, trampoline park, trips to
amusement parks).

4. Ensure that the health and safety, equal opportunities, safeguarding and other BYC
policies are observed and implemented by all members of staff and volunteers.

5. Deal with any difficult situations that may arise in the club in a calm and effective
manner, raising any concerns with the Management Committee and completing
incident reports as needed. Act as the safeguarding lead for Youth Club.

6. Take part in any training deemed necessary for the role (e.g. safeguarding, health
and safety, mental health awareness) and ensure the rest of the team are up-to-date
with mandatory training

7. Establish boundaries and challenge inappropriate behaviour, setting the tone for the
team of youth workers and the young people themselves. Ensure a balance is
maintained between a friendly, relaxed and welcoming environment with a
respectful and safe one for all young people, staff and volunteers.

Key tasks

1. Undertake administrative tasks (including rotas), maintain effective recording
systems, respond to queries and ensure all documents and policies are up-to-date.

2. Promote Youth Club within the local community, raising the profile by occasional
visits to local schools and other settings and advocating for young people’s interests
within the town.

3. Co-ordinate regular fundraising events, working with the Management Committee
and youth worker team to promote the events.

4. Ensure weekly subs are collected from members.

5. Purchase any items needed for Youth Club, such as craft materials and tuck shop
supplies, maintaining receipts and liaising with the Treasurer to ensure correct
financial records are maintained.

6. Liaise with members of the Management Committee as issues emerge and attend
regular committee meetings. Attend meetings of the Bradninch Youth Club Trust as
needed with members of the Management Committee to report on latest news from
Youth Club.
7. Ensure permission slips are sought for all young people wanting to attend. This
includes the use of photos and adhering to GDPR regulations.

8. Ensure the club is left clean and tidy at the end of each session. Undertake risk
assessments to ensure health and safety standards are met for sessions and for any
external trips.

9. Keep up-to-date with best practice in youth work through liaison with Space (Devon
Youth Services), VOYC Devon and other national and local networks.

10. Undertake any other such duties of a similar level of responsibility from time to time
as requested.

Person specification

Skills and abilities

It is essential that the post holder:

 Has the ability to engage with young people ranging in age from 11 – 16 from all
backgrounds

 Is able to manage and motivate a small team of paid staff and volunteers

 Is able to work on their own initiative

 Has good written, verbal and numerical communication skills

 Is able to cope in sometimes stressful situations and to work well under pressure

 Has the confidence and respect for inclusivity and confidentiality to mentor and offer
guidance to young people on topics such as sexual health, mental health, drugs and
alcohol, bullying, crime, racism, etc

Experience and knowledge

It is essential that the post holder:

 Has experience of working with young people, preferably in a youth work setting

 Has an understanding of and empathy with the issues facing young people, such
as sexual and mental health, drugs and alcohol, etc.

 Has an understanding of equal opportunities policies and their implementation,
preferably in a youth work setting

It is desirable that the post holder: 

 Has an understanding of health, safety and welfare issues, preferably in a youth
work setting

 Has an understanding of child protection and safeguarding issues

 Has experience of observing and implementing policies, plans and procedures,
preferably within a youth work setting

 Has experience of advice, information, support and development work for young
people seeking education, training or employment

 Has experience of community outreach, promotion and fundraising work,
preferably in a youth work setting

Qualifications

It is essential that the post holder:

 Is willing to undertake all required training

It is desirable that the post holder:

 Has a youth work qualification, preferably to a minimum of NVQ Level 2 or
equivalent

 Has GCSEs or equivalent qualifications in English and Maths

 Has previous training in health and safety, first aid, sexual health and safeguarding
